On March 28-29, 2014, in Nikolaev, the traditional memorial tournament in commemoration of Professor Michael Alexandrov was held for the 21^st time.

Captains of the participating teams hoisted the national flag of Ukraine while the national anthem was being played. The tournament was declared open.

        The first semi-finals was played between MDEM-Korabel (Shipbuilder) team and team of Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), winner of the last year’s memorial tournament. In the first quarter MDEM- Korabel team kept ahead of SSU team by three points 10 : 7. After a tough first quarter SSU team took control of the game and won the second period without any doubts 21 : 8. The third period passed in equal strife 16 : 16. The fourth quarter was highly competitive. Both teams attempted to take the lead several times throughout the course of the period. SSU team won the fourth period with a small lead 20 : 18 that allowed them to seal the victory 64 : 52. Bobrov and Palienko paved the way for the winners with 18 points apiece. Maslov added 12 points. MDEM- Korabel’s best scorers Mikhailov and Kulik collected 20 and 15 points respectively.

 In the second semi-finals AMICO-NUS team romped to a 84 : 32 victory over the Institute of Humanities’ team.

 The MDEM-Korabel team competed with the Institute of Humanities’ team for bronze medals. Charming Elena Zhukova took part in the man’s basketball tournament joining the MDEM-Korabel team. By the way, she is the Director of «Marine Design Engineering Mykolayiv» LLC (MDEM) and the founder of the MDEM-Korabel team. Particularly Elena was the leader and the main contributor (impressive 8 points shooting from the field, just all in the first period) to her team’s victory, helping them to beat the Institute of Humanities’ team with 31-point margin 62 : 31.

      In the final AMICO-NUS team played against its archrival and reigning owner of the Tournament’s Cup – team of Security Service of Ukraine (SSU). Since 1993, AMICO-NUS team for the 19 consecutive times was winner of the tournaments dedicated to Michael Alexandrov. But last year SSU team defeated AMICO-NUS team and conquered the Cup. In this battle AMICO-NUS team was eager for a revenge.

    From the very start of the game both teams began offensive actions. In the first period Denisov was the main scoring source for AMICO-NUS dropping 14 points. Palienko led SSU team with 11 points. AMICO-NUS finished the first quarter with a 23-17 advantage. In the second quarter AMICO-NUS team appeared to maintain the domination throughout the whole period. At the half-time break AMICO-NUS had a 51-35 lead. During the third period AMICO-NUS experienced players were changing the rhythm of the game like chess tactics. AMICO-NUS outscored SSU team 21-18 in this period and increased the total gap to 72 : 53.

 The fourth quarter began with hot shooting of Denisov (AMICO-NUS) who helped his team to take control of the game. At the last minute of the game successful free-throw from AMICO-NUS’ big man Andrey Berezhinskiy passed the 100-point mark. Kovtunenko sank a triple with 2 seconds remaining to play and AMICO-NUS team claimed 103 : 70 triumph.  AMICO-NUS’ players led by long-time captain Yuriy Zhukov achieved an incredible record of 20 memorial tournament’s wins that will go in history.
